course where most of the time is spent working outside to gain
first hand training on the practical skills required at a higher

Chelsea Flower Show Symposium
Saturday 22nd May to Sunday 30th
May 2010
This trip which is led by Fergus Garrett is an
exciting opportunity to visit the Chelsea flower show in May as
well as specialist nurseries in the south of England. Visits will
also include Sissinghurst Castle gardens for a private tour and
to Beth Chatto unusual plants and RHS Wisley for the plant Trials.

The
Art of Gardening at Great Dixter

Christopher Lloyd was one
of the most inspired plants men and garden writers of the past
century. He spent his lifetime practicing and refining his art
at Great Dixter, his family’s rambling Sussex Manor in southeast
England. We are offering an intensive, hands-on course from 12th
to 19th September conducted by Fergus Garrett, Lloyd’s talented
head gardener and friend.

Great Dixter Exclusive Study
Days with Head Gardener Fergus Garrett

Stay for two nights in the magnificent 15th Century manor house,
the home of the late Christopher Lloyd. Experience an exclusive
one day course limited to four people. Fergus Garrett and his
team will instruct and demonstrate a wide range of horticultural
practices. The course will be tailor made to suite your needs
and could range from an intensive highly practical day to one
that is purely theoretical and made up of lectures. Subjects include
designing with plants, succession planting, meadow gardening,
staking and pruning.
Price: £1,000 per person

Snowdrop & Crocus Weekends
13th & 14th February and 20th
& 21st February
This will be the fourth opportunity for the public to view the
garden in late winter. Great Dixter is full of winter interest
including snowdrops, crocuses, hellebores and much more. The garden
has a beautiful structure which becomes even more apparent at
this time of year. Visitors will get an insight into the preparation
for opening which will be in full swing at a time when the garden
has only ever been enjoyed by Christopher Lloyd and his gardening
team. There will be an opportunity to buy a range of snowdrops
at the nursery.

Preparing Your Border for Spring
and Summer-The Practicalities
Monday 29th March 2010
Fergus will show you how this preparatory work is timetabled.
Subjects covered will be: bulb planting; the cutting down, splitting
and replanting of perennials, thinning out of self-sowers, pruning,
composts and composting, working in the rain without ruining the
structure of your soil. Essential winter maintenance work will
be covered on this very practical orientated day. Most of the
tuition will be through slides and demonstrations. Refreshments

Succession Planting in the Mixed
Border
Monday 12th April 2010
Using the magnificent Long Border as an example Fergus Garrett
will talk you through how to plan and put into practice a long
season border using; structural plants, underplanting and interplanting
of bulbs, use of self-sowers, pockets of bedding, masking with
climbers, and good maintenance.This is a very intensive day. The
day will include slides and talks in The Great Hall, and discussion
sessions on the border. Refreshments and lunch included. We are

Nursery Propagation Day

to taking cuttings, sowing seeds, splitting perennials and looking

superior ones? The day will give you an insight on how the experts
assess plants. Using a wide variety of examples from shrubs to
annuals the day will include choosing which ones give you better
flowers, are better proportioned, have superior foliage, have
a longer season. With an insight into the Award of Garden Merit
process Fergus explains this critical process of separating the
good from the bad and mediocre.
