The Dilip Lakhani Foundation Scholarship
The scholarship provides a trainee Landscape Architect from the University of Greenwich with a 3 month immersion into a highly complex traditional garden.
It seeks to equip the successful candidate with plant knowledge, a practical gardening skill set, and an understanding of the ‘sense of place’ needed to manage complex gardens and landscapes, as well as practical understanding of themes such as how to garden for climate resilience and how gardened or managed landscapes can help to support biodiversity. It is hoped that the Scholars, will integrate this learning into their future practice.
Applicants for the Traineeship should have:
- Completed either their 2nd or 3rd year BA Landscape Architecture undergraduate degree at Greenwich University or be currently studying for the MLA or MA in Landscape architecture
- Interest in garden history
- Interest in contemporary gardening and horticultural issues
- Ability to communicate with professional colleagues, volunteers and members of the public visiting the garden
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work with a team of volunteers towards shared objectives
It is expected that the successful applicant will have completed all their university submissions before commencing the placement.
The Traineeship will run from Monday June 22nd 2026 to Friday 11th September 2026 (12 weeks in total). Dates to be confirmed with successful applicant and in line with their university submissions deadlines.
The Scholars are paid as a Great Dixter employee during the 12 week programme. The scholars will be paid minimum wage and have the option of living in subsidised accommodation on site. The position is full-time (40 hours a week). Pro rata annual leave allocation will be provided (6.25 days)
