Bulbs, border design, editing and management Symposium – Saturday 7 November to Saturday 14 November 2026

This is a week-long, practical, hands-on symposium with a maximum of 8 attendees. 80% of the time will be outside in the garden and 20% indoors. Accommodation, meals, as well as transport to and from the hotel every day are included within the price of the course.

Lectures and workshops with head gardener Fergus Garrett will explore the following topics:

  • An introduction to Great Dixter
  • A timetable of garden work covering the end of summer, autumn, winter into spring
  • Choosing and using bulbs and other supporting elements to enable a long season of interest – the varied use of bulbs and groundcover plants in the garden including permanent underplanting, pocket plantings of interest and creating bulb displays in containers used for assessing and understanding timing and growth habits
  • Bedding out with bulbs in pockets integrated into the main display
  • Assessing borders, editing, rejuvenating, and integrating bulbs and other plants for a long display
  • Nursery propagation – general propagation techniques as well as seasonal propagation

Price: £3,850 per person.  A (non-refundable) deposit of £850 is required to secure a booking with the balance payable 8 weeks before the start date of the Symposium.
