General Symposium-May 2026

General Symposium – Saturday 9 May to Saturday 16 May 2026

This is a week-long theory-based, general symposium, the aim being to explain and inspire, with a maximum of 12 attendees. Although theory based, 50% of the time will be spent outside in the garden. Accommodation, meals, as well as transport to and from the hotel every day are included within the price of the course.

Lectures and workshops with head gardener Fergus Garrett will explore the following topics:

  • An introduction to Great Dixter
  • Good planting and designing with plants
  • How to choose superior plants
  • Succession planting and extending the season
  • Nursery propagation, seed sowing and understanding composts
  • Meadows and meadow gardening
  • Timetabling of tasks
  • Sub-tropical gardening
  • Staking and tying
  • Composts, border soil improvement and composting

Price: £3,850 per person. A (non-refundable) deposit of £850 is required to secure a booking with the balance payable 8 weeks before the start date of the Symposium.
