Propagation for gardeners

Propagation at Great Dixter is a year-round affair and helps to ensure our borders are full of colour and interest, and our plants are well maintained. This new practical course will be led by the garden and nursery teams at Great Dixter, and will help you to understand how propagation is structured through the year. 

You will learn: 

-About compost mixes including how to adapt shop bought compost mixes for best propagation results

-Seed sowing: how to sow different seeds for best results, seed sowing timing including how and when to sow, prick out and pot on hardy and summer annuals. 

– Cuttings- hard wood, root, soft wood, basal and leaf cuttings – how and when to take cuttings and which cutting type is the best to choose for best results.

-Low tech cold frame and greenhouse management including good housekeeping to minimise pests and disease. 

-Intelligent use of space and how to make decisions on what to keep and what to throw away and deal with lurkers. 

-Irrigation – how to become intuitive with watering for best results

-Pest control without chemicals- our top tips

-Propagation pitfalls 

The course includes lunch and refreshments as well as plenty of plant material to take home and nurture- please bring a box or a bag for transportation.
