Bronze Pointed Spade

This bronze, pointed spade is made in Austria and has quietly come to be known as the tool of choice for many professionals. Bronze is an alloy made predominantly from copper with a little tin added for the purposes of hardness.

These bronze spades have a beautiful, ergonomic shape and the high proportion of copper in the blade (smoother than steel) means the tool goes into the ground more easily and less sticks to the blade on exit – making lighter work of hard tasks. The shaft is made from steam-bent ash with a beech handle.

Great Dixter Planting Fork

The fork version of the planting spade, allowing precision and control when you are on your hands and knees but greater leverage and power than a hand tool as a result of the length of the handle. The fork head enables you to weed in tight spaces whilst in a crouching position but can also be used to titivate the soil. The short handle length means it fits perfectly into the body when working with it. Handle made from ash.

Great Dixter Planting Spade

These tools are hand-forged in stainless steel by Sneeboer & Zn and are the best we have come across. This spade is part of a range especially designed by Great Dixter.

As much of our planting is done on our hands and knees, this short handled spade with a narrow head makes digging larger holes easier and less arduous than using a hand trowel. The handle enables you to use both hands when digging but also gives greater control and precision than you would have using a proper length spade. Its angled head means you can scoop the soil out. This is a really useful tool when tucking in plants amongst others. It has an ash handle.

Great Dixter Trowel Ash Handle

These tools are hand-forged in stainless steel by Sneeboer & Zn and are the best we have come across. This trowel is part of a range especially designed by Great Dixter.

This trowel, designed to the specifications of Christopher Lloyd, was one of his favourite tools for planting and weeding. It is narrow to allow you into tight spaces but sturdy for leverage when weeding difficult plants. The rounded tip gives you a good cutting surface and the length of blade allows you depth in the soil. It has an ash handle.
